Center for Environmental Justice

Mantra:Justice for the Earth, Equity for its People

About Us

The Center for Environmental Justice at Delaware State University is an emerging center in the fight for environmental, water, and health equity for disadvantaged communities. Our mission is to confront systemic inequalities exacerbating environmental challenges and develop innovative, community-driven solutions promoting sustainability and resilience. By empowering students, fostering strategic partnerships, and engaging in cutting-edge research, we are building a future where everyone has access to clean air, safe water, and a healthy environment.

Our work integrates social equity with environmental sustainability, emphasizing water justice and the voices of those most affected by environmental harm. We collaborate with policymakers, scientists, Environmental Finance Centers (EFCs), academics, industry leaders, and community advocates to amplify marginalized voices and empower and equip the next generation of environmental advocates with the tools and platform to drive meaningful change.

What We Offer

  1. Education and Experiential Training: Our Center offers comprehensive educational and professional development opportunities designed to support students, faculty, and community leaders. Through programs like the One Water Cohort, students gain the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to become advocates for environmental justice, with a focus on issues like water quality, climate resilience, and green career pathways. Our workshops, seminars, and internships provide historically underrepresented groups with the tools to lead in this critical field.
  2. Research and Policy Development: At the heart of our Center is research that drives action. We conduct interdisciplinary research focused on water equity and other pressing environmental issues, using participatory approaches to inform policy solutions that address the needs of vulnerable populations. Our team collaborates with local and national partners to produce actionable reports and policy recommendations that tackle inequities head-on, particularly in areas affected by environmental hazards.
  3. Community Engagement and Advocacy: We are committed to turning research into action. Through robust community engagement initiatives, conferences, and partnerships, we ensure that those most impacted by environmental injustices have a voice in the solutions. Our outreach programs empower students and community members alike to advocate for policies that promote justice and sustainability, connecting academic work with real-world impact.
  4. Strategic Guidance and Technical Support Services: Our faculty and staff provide expert general and technical assistance to communities, offering guidance on environmental policy, advocacy, and resilience strategies. By partnering with local organizations, we help design and implement long-term solutions that lead to lasting environmental justice and equity.
  5. Internships and Fellowships: Our internships and fellowships place students at the forefront of environmental justice work, providing them with hands-on experience in organizations that are driving change at local, national, and global levels. These opportunities allow students to build meaningful careers in environmental law, policy, advocacy, or sustainability, all while contributing to the movement for a more just and equitable world.

Join us at Delaware State University’s Center for Environmental Justice and become part of a movement that’s reshaping the future of environmental justice, one solution at a time.
